Blogging and Dieting – Yes They are Very Similar

I was going along so well for several weeks during the blog challenge. I was writing every day and, much to my surprise, I was actually enjoying it and looking forward to the next post. But then something happened. I got busy and worse yet, I got out of the habit. Once that happens, look out – snowball effect! A few days went by, and then a week, and then another week, and still no posts. At some point, I finally gave up on the blog challenge but vowed to get back into it and finish up. I will still do that, but today’s post is just about getting back on track and the lessons I’ve learned from getting off track.

Yes, there are lessons to be learned from those invisible blog posts from the last 3 weeks. I learned that it was very easy to get into the habit of writing every day and just as easy to fall out of that habit. When I started my blog, I figured a couple posts a week was plenty and really had no intention of doing more than that. A few posts on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook in between would be just enough Laura Wagner on the web. But then an amazingly wonderful thing happened during the blog challenge; I was actually enjoying all the writing and I couldn’t wait for the next day so I could write more.

However when I ran out of time a few days, it became easier to not find the time the next day and the next and the next. It’s sort of like when you’re doing really well on your diet and then you mess up one day but you get on the scale anyway. You see there is no problem, no weight gain, so you think you can get away with it the next day and . . . You know what happens!

Now I am determined to practice what I preach to my clients and get working on my entire social media strategy, including blogging. I obviously have some scheduling issues, as do most small business owners. There usually are not enough hours in a day and that is the biggest push-back I hear when talking to biz owners about using social media to promote their business. I will try to be a better example in the future. I wish I could say the same about dieting!
